Renewing Your Wedding Vows

When you first say your wedding vows, you take them to heart, but you don’t realize what they really mean. When you use traditional vows, you may think the parts that talk about sickness and health, richer and poorer, and better or worse are quaint, but they don’t mean much.

As you go through the years of your marriage, you will soon understand exactly why those things are included in many types of wedding vows. Commitment is easy when you are happy, in love, and are walking down the aisle, but it is not so easy when things get bad.

The true test of any union is when things go wrong. Think about poorer, worse, and sickness. Those are all things that can test the deepest of loves. When they happen, couples really learn what commitment is about. Are they going to honor their wedding vows or not? Commitment means sticking it out when you don’t want to be there, and that is a promise many give up on too easily. There are some reasons that seem to void wedding vows, but other than abuse or abandonment, the union should be saved if at all possible. That is what commitment is all about.

When things go wrong, and couples work through whatever happened, they may want to find ways to show each other that they really mean what they say and that they want things to be good again. One thing some do is go through therapy, and that can do wonders, or they may find special ways to show a renewed love and marriage. Some think that renewing their wedding vows is the way to go, and that can make a strong statement to the spouse and the family that may have known that things were not so good for a while. This reaffirms what their marriage vows mean to them, and even that they really understand what they mean now.

What you should think about when renewing marriage vows is what you want to say. You may want to recite the ones that you said on your wedding day, or you may want to do something else. Many who are looking to renew wedding vows often want to write their own so that they can cover what may have gone wrong and what they have learned about marriage and their spouse. Either is great, and you really can’t go wrong if you follow your heart.

Wedding Poems

According to my dad, wedding poems are quite a tradition in his family. Wedding invitation poems, poems read during during the bridal shower, the wedding dinner, and the actual wedding ceremony, and many other examples of wedding poetry go back generations in his family. After all, many of them are wordsmiths. Within my father's family line, there are literally dozens of fairly well-known poets and authors. That these people can compose a wedding poem is no surprise to anyone who has read their works. They are some pretty talented people.

When it was time for me to get married, however, I sort of shrugged when confronted with the idea of wedding poems. I wasn't particularly interested. To tell you the truth, I was a little bit insecure. My poetry wasn't bad, but compared to some of the poems that had come out of my father's family, it wasn't very good either. I knew that I wasn't a talented writer, and had grown accustomed to that fact, but even so it felt like a shame to have to showcase my mediocre wedding poem in front of hundreds of guests.

Nonetheless, I knew that it was important to my father. Let's face it – weddings are as much for the parents as they are for the people getting married. A wedding poem was something that was expected of me, and I wanted to do my dad proud. I took a lot of time to come up with the perfect poetry. As a matter of fact, it took me months. I thought about wedding poems, looked at wedding poetry on line, bought a few collections of poetry, and basically found inspiration whenever I could. I went through dozens and dozens of drafts, but I finally came up with something that I really liked.

Although I wanted to show my wedding poems to my dad ahead of time, I decided to keep them secret. This was the traditional way of doing it, after all. When it came time to read my poem in front of the guests, I got very nervous. It took me a moment, but I steadied myself and got ready to read. When I was finally finished, there was a hush over the room. Then people applauded. Apparently, even average writers can come up with good wedding poems If they put enough work into it. The key is sincerity and good taste. I have both of those qualities in abundance.
